Film Courses 4
POSTPRODUCTION
In this course, students examine intermediate non-linear online editing techniques—including engineering, color correction, and special effects—using footage from the Film Production course. Students then edit a short story that includes titles, music, and a finished edit. Sound postproduction is included.
PRODUCTION I
This course places students “on the set” to produce a complete comedy or drama. Students work in all positions and are mentored by a crew of industry professionals while working with a cast of professional actors. They learn the specific skills needed by each of the departments and the collaboration essential to becoming successful filmmakers. The show is produced in accordance with standard workflow and practice, allowing students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in professional production.
PRODUCTION II
In this course students work autonomously to produce short films by serving in each of the positions involved in a professional film production. Participation in lectures and labs gives them theoretical as well as hands-on experience in every aspect of production. Working with professionally configured systems, the course examines the entire filmmaking process from preproduction to editing. Subjects covered include: set construction, scenic painting, set decorating, directing, working with talent, cinematography, shooting styles, lens selections, sound design and location, stage mixing, production organization and hierarchy, special effects, video capture and non-linear editing, with a focus on collaboration and the role of the crafts in storytelling.
PRODUCING INDEPENDENT FILM
This course explores the world of line producing and the production infrastructure of independent film. Students learn all aspects of prepping the shoot, including scheduling, budgeting, project pitching, script breakdowns, assembling talent, assembling crew positions, location scouting/shooting, and financing. Students use this course to pre-produce their final project films.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
The Production Design course focuses on the responsibilities of the production designer and his or her crew within the art department. This course introduces the principles of production design and addresses how they apply to a motion picture. The overall mood and visual appearance of a film is explored through the fundamentals of design. Subjects covered include script breakdown, storyboards, the effects of color, drafting, elevations, and set research. The course culminates in students designing a film set for use in the Film Production course.
SCREENWRITING
This course represents the core of visual storytelling; it is the art of adapting thoughts and ideas for production and presentation on the screen. This course explores both the technical and creative aspects of writing, re-writing, polishing, and delivering teleplays in accordance with motion picture and television industry standards.
