LAFS Students Earn Recognition
The Los Angeles Film School is proud to announce the accomplishments of two current students that were recently recognized for their efforts in film.
Whit Brayton
LAFS Student Whit Brayton’s short film Gone by Fire was a runner-up in the BAFTA/LA Student Film Awards, which was held at the American Film Institute’s Mark Goodson Theater.
The special evening of screenings featured seven films from a number of film schools. After the screening, the BAFTA/LA Voting Members in attendance voted on their top films and the winners were presented with their Awards by BAFTA/LA Member Hakeem Kae Kazim.
Since its inception, the BAFTA/LA Student Film Awards has continued to honor the creativity of emerging new filmmakers, offering a platform to present their films to an audience of Industry professionals. 10 Southern California Film Schools participated this year, with a Jury consisting of members of the Education and Outreach Committee selecting seven extraordinary finalists from 28 submissions.
Kelly Mahoney
Sponsored by Producing Course Director Gabrielle Kelly, LAFS student Kelly Mahoney is the first student ever from LAFS to be accepted into the highly prestigious and competitive Directors Guild of America Training Program.
The two-year Directors Guild-Producer Training Plan, which receives thousands of applications each year, was established by the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to provide equal access to men and women of diverse backgrounds to participate in an industry sponsored two-year program in which applicants are trained to become a Second Asst. Director. Upon completion, they are eligible to join the DGA.
As one of her first projects, Mahoney is currently working on J.J. Abrams newest film Morning Glory, starring Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton.
